Encrypting a file with WinZip

Ftp and email are not secure methods of transferring data. Data sent this way could be intercepted and read by another. If you need to transfer sensitive information, you should either send the information via a secure method (such as secureftp) or encrypt the data before sending it. Using PGP is one method of encrypting files. Another is to create a password-protected zip archive containing your data. Winzip is a Windows utility for managing archives. This document will describe how to use WinZip to password-protect and encrypt a file on a Windows computer.

First, create a zip file containing your data. Find and highlight the files you want to zip in Windows Explorer or by opening My Computer. Right-click your selected file(s) and select WinZip > Add to Zip file... WinZip will prompt you to name the new archive and will add the files you had selected.

Next, from the Action menu select Encrypt... Choose a password that is not easy to guess and type it where requested. Select either the 128-bit or 256-bit AES encryption option. See the image below.

The file or files in your zip file will now have an asterisk beside the file name indicating that they are encrypted. They will now require the password you created to be extracted and viewed.

Send the zip file you just created to its intended recipient. Send them the password seperately; for example, by phone. Do not send the password via the same method the zip file is sent.
