Thunderbird junk mail controls

You can train Thunderbird to recognize and deal with email messages that you consider junk mail. It will make guesses about what is junk and if you help it, those guesses will become very accurate. Here's how to do that.

First, turn on Junk Mail filtering in Thunderbird. From the Tools menu, select Junk Mail Controls... A message box may appear if this is the first time you've gone into the Junk Mail Controls, explaining you are about to se this up, select "ok".

In the Junk Mail Controls window, go to the Adaptive Filter tab and enable junk mail detection by checking the box as below. (This may already be checked)

Junk Mail Controls

Click OK to save your changes. Thunderbird will begin marking messages as Junk by placing a trash can icon to the right of the sender's name in the mailbox list. See the image below for an example. (Freddy Falcon doesn't really send spam. He was just helping us out.)

Junk List

See the Trash can icon on the right of each message? If Thunderbird were wrong about any of these messages being spam, just click the Trash can icon for that message. The icon will go away and Thunderbird will no longer consider that type of message spam. You will have to manually move the message back to your inbox.

If Thunderbird fails to mark an email message as spam that really is, click that space in the junk mail column. A Trash icon will appear and it is now marked as junk.

If you take the time to train Thunderbird in this way, in a few weeks it will get very good at correctly identifying Junk mail. After a few weeks, you may now turn on the automatic handling of Junk Mail Controls. Choose "Tools" and then "Junk Mail Controls" Now on the "Settings" tab you have controls that can automatically handle your junk mail. You can configure your email just as below. This will automatically move messages that Thunderbird has determined to be junk right into the "junk" folder, they won't appear in your inbox. It is set to auto delete the contents of the junk folder older than 14 days. This gives you time to periodically check the folder for mis-directed email.
