This set of documents explains how you can use Thunderbird 1.5 to reduce your email and get under quota
Select your Inbox and right-click your Inbox in Thunderbird and choose Properties or choose "Folder Properties..." from the Edit menu.
Go to the Quota tab. Faculty and staff should see an available quota of 200000 Kb or 200 Mb. If yours is less, please send a request to IT Services to have your quota increased to 200 Mb.
The percent full is displayed. Now you have an idea how much you need to reduce to get some elbow room.
