Subscribing to folders in Outlook Express

Shared folders (which may be called mailboxes in other clients, such as Eudora) are folders that are not your own, but that you may have access to on the mail server. Examples of these are the facstf-l and students mailing list folders. These instructions will help you access those folders, as well as shared personal mail folders that another individual may have given you access to. While the illustrations are from Outlook Express, the view from Microsoft Entourage is nearly identical and the process is the same.

These instructions are somewhat technical. You may wish to print these instructions. If you would like assistance with this, please contact IT Services.

  1. Click on the item named UW-RF in the "Folders" column on the left side of the main window. This represents your UW-RF mail account and contains any folders you have access to on the mail server. In the right side of the main window, you should see a folder structure similar to the following (you may have to click the small triangles next to items to view their contents).
    main window
  2. The folders which you are not subscribed to (and so don't see the contents of) will appear with a small X across their icon (X folder icon) . If the folder you wish to see does not appear in the list, click the Update List button (Update List) to refresh the list.
  3. To subscribe to folders that you are not subscribed to and enable you to view the contents of them, click the Subscribe button (Subscribe) button in the toolbar across the top of the window.
  4. The folder should now appear in the list in the left column. Click on the name of the folder to view its contents.
