Macintosh Wireless Troubleshooting Guide

This is a step-by-step guide to troubleshooting a FalconAir wireless connection problem. We do not support connecting to FalconAir using versions of Macintosh OS older than MacOS X (recommend 10.2 or newer).

1. Do you see the Airport menu in your menubar?

To enable the Airport menu in your menubar, follow the instructions located here.

2. When you click on the Airport menu, the first menu item (which will be greyed out) will indicate the status of your wireless card. Is it "Off" or "On"?

To turn on your wireless card, select "Turn Airport On" from the Airport menu.

3. Do you see "FalconAir" listed in the AirPort menu?

Your laptop is does not appear to be receiving the wireless network signal. This could be caused by interference from parts of the building structure you're located in or perhaps the design of your wireless network card. Try moving to a different location in the wireless coverage area.

4. Select FalconAir from the list of networks. Does it ask you if you want to add FalconAir to your list of trusted networks?

Click "OK" to add FalconAir to your list of trusted networks.

5. Open up your web browser. If your web browser is not set to open a default website, attempt to connect to one. You will be re-directed to the FalconAir Wireless Network login page. Log in with your Falcon account username (includes a 'w') and password. Were you returned to the login page with a red error message?

If you get an error message, your username or password is likely incorrect. If you cannot remember your password, you will need to reset it with Falcon Account Administration. If you are certain your password is correct and you cannot log in, contact the IT Services HelpDesk (715-425-4357).

6. If you weren't denied access, the first time you log in you may be presented with a "Virus Protection Information" page. This is to inform you that as a UW-RF student, faculty or staff member, an anti-virus software package is available to you.

You need to click "Agree" to this page to connect.

7. You will be presented with a page indicating you have successfully logged in and a logout button will be present. You can now make use of the wireless Internet connection.
