Slide or Negative Scanning

Brief instructions follow on how to scan an image using the Nikon scanner attached to Green-28. If you need more detailed information, there is a manual that can be checked out from the HelpDesk. This scanner will scan from either a slide or a negative. If you are using a negative, you will need to check out the negative holder that goes into the scanner from the HelpDesk.

The instructions that follow show how to scan using the Nikon Scan software. If you want to scan directly into Photoshop you can do so - at step 3 Go to the Apple menu, Applications, Publishing, then choose Photoshop 6. In Photoshop go to the File menu and choose Import, Nikon Scan. This will open the scanning software program within Photoshop. Step 4 will not apply if you use Photoshop.

  1. Make sure the computer and scanner are turned on. (There will be a green light on the front of the scanner to indicate that the scanner is on. The on/off switch is on the right hand side of the scanner towards the back.)
  2. Clean dust from slide or negative. Pick off the dust with a brush Ð do not brush as this only moves the dust around on the slide. Never blow on the film as this puts moisture on the film that can leave permanent marks.
Insert slide lengthwise (see example below) emulsion side down. At this point it does not matter if the picture is vertical or horizontal.

If you are scanning a negative for the first time, check out the Nikon manual (yellow) for detailed instructions on how to load the negatives into the negative holder.

  3. Go to the Apple menu, Applications, Publishing, then choose Nikon Control 2.2
  4. You should see the following Control Palette on your screen:
  5. Passing the cursor over the icons in this palette will show you what each icon does.

Click on the acquire single image icon- top left in this palette.

You should now see the main scanning window.

  6. The following picture shows the top left of the scanning window. Click on the Settings button and choose Factory Default. This is to ensure that you don't get stuck with settings left over from a previous scan by another user.
  7. Click on the Film Type button (next to the Settings button) and make sure that Color and Positive are checked if you are scanning a color slide. Color and Negative should be checked for a color negative.
  8. Click on the Preview button - bottom right of the scanning window. After a short wait the image will appear in the right hand side of the scanning window.
  9. Type in the Output Resolution that you want - a good starting point is 300 pixels/inch. This will allow you to go lower later and to keep the file size manageable.
  10. Select the part of the image that you want scanned by drawing a box around the desired area in the preview window.
  11. You can adjust the scale to your liking. The file size is shown in this same part of the window so you can see how adjusting this affects the file size.
  12. You can adjust the brightness and contrast in the image by clicking and holding on the following buttons:

and you can adjust the gamma curve by moving the line in the black/white squared area - play with this to see the effects:

  13.

  14. Click on Scan button (bottom right of window).
If the image needs rotating you can use the rotating tool in the Control Palette.
  15. To save the image go to the File menu and choose Save As...
Choose the location where you want to save the image.
In the Filename: box enter the name for the file.
In the File Type: box select the format that you want to save the image as.
Finally click on the Save button.

When finished scanning remember to remove your slide or negative from the scanner. If you checked out either the negative holder or the manual, please remember to return them to the HelpDesk when you are finished.
