iMovie in the Macintosh Labs

iMovie logo

iMovie is a beginner's level video editing application available for the Macintosh platform that provides basic, yet powerful, video editing capabilities. The video format that iMovie uses is DV (the format used by MiniDV camcorders which can be checked out from Television Services (part of ITS) or the Educational Technology Center.

Find the folder | Deletion of folders

To support the instructional applications of editing video at UWRF, IT Services has developed software and practices to provide students with storage space for their iMovie projects.

The following limitations/rules currently apply:

  1. This storage space is provided on the hard drive of the lab computer being used. This means:
    1. Students using this space must return to the exact same computer to continue work on a saved project. For example, projects saved on computer 'red-01' cannot be accessed from computer 'red-02'.
    2. Storage space is limited to that computer and is shared with anybody using that computer. If many students are using the same computer for projects, disk space could be exhausted and create difficulties in using the computer (such as it may not boot up).
  2. Once a file has been saved in the storage space, the folder will remain for two weeks or until it's found to be empty on logout, whichever happens first.

How to find the folder:

When you first log into a Macintosh lab workstation, it creates a local profile folder to store settings and documents. This profile folder includes a Movies folder for iMovie projects.

At right is a view of the default file navigation window for the Finder application (the software that presents the desktop view of files and disks).

The item circled in blue is a shortcut to your profile folder that is stored on the computer you logged into. It is not the same as your FalconFile space, which may appear higher up in the navigation bar if you've connected to FalconFile.

The Movies folder where iMove projects should be stored is circled in red.

How the folders are deleted:

There are three occasions when an iMovie project folder is deleted:

  1. It's expired.
  2. It's empty.
  3. The computer is erased and reloaded due to major software problems (this is relatively rare).

The first two criteria are checked for each folder when the computer boots up. Additionally, these criteria are checked for the folder belonging to the account using the computer when that person logs out.
