Instructions for scanning an image into Photoshop in the Red Lab (Macintosh)

Brief instructions follow on how to scan an image into Photoshop using the ScanJet 6300C attached to red-31. If you need more detailed information, there is built-in Help in the scanning software under the Help Menu - HP PrecisionScan Pro Help

  1. Make sure the computer and scanner are turned on. (There will be a green light on the front of the scanner to indicate that the scanner is on)
  2. Place the picture face down in the upper right corner of the scanner.
  3. Go to the Apple menu, Applications, Publishing, then choose Photoshop 6.
  4. In Photoshop go to the File menu and choose Import, HP Precision Scan. This will open the scanning software program and you should see the following toolbar on your screen:

  5. Click on in the toolbar and the scanner will do a preview scan and the image will appear in the scanning software window.
  6. Select the part of the image that you want scanned by drawing a box around the desired area in the preview window. In the bottom right of the window you will see the size of the file that will be generated.
  7. The default settings for scan resolution may not be appropriate for your final use of the image you are scanning. These settings can be adjusted before you do a final scan.
    1. Select Resolution and Dimensions from the Tools menu if they don't already have check marks next to them:
    2. Adjust the resolution in the box located at the right end of the button bar of the scan window. When scanning images for web pages or PowerPoint presentations, the final resolution should be no more than 100dpi (72 recommended). Scanning at high resolutions will increase the size of your file, which will increase download time for web pages and potentially cause display problems with PowerPoint presentations:
    3. Adjust the size of your final scan in the Dimensions tool palette. This can either be done in inches (default) or pixels:

  8. Click on in the toolbar to scan the image to Photoshop.
  9. After the image has been scanned, the scanner software will quit and the image will appear in the Photoshop window.
  10. PhotoShop can now be used to further edit and manipulate the image.
  11. To save the image go to the File menu and choose Save As...

When finished scanning remember to remove your document from the scanner
