This document discusses how to work with pop-up window and cookie blocking when visiting trusted site. A trusted site is a web site that you know and trust will provide safe and useful content. By default, Internet Explorer now blocks pop-up windows from many web pages. This is great for eliminating unwanted advertising, but it is also a problem when you need the information a pop-up window would provide. The suggestions below explain how to allow pop-ups where you need them when using Internet Explorer. If you re using a different web browser, we recommend you use Internet Explorer and use the instructions below.
Internet Exlorer blocks pop-up windows by default. This is to prevent annoying pop-up advertisements. But sometimes the pop up is needed. Common campus applications that require pop-up windows for some functions include eSIS, Desire2Learn, and the Student Payroll system.
Pop-up blocking may be caused by add-on toolbars or by Internet Explorer itself. If you are using Add-on toolbars such from third parties such as Google, Yahoo, Alexis, or others, we recommend that you remove them using the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. Contact IT Services if you need help with this.
Once third-party applications have been removed, you must also configure Internet Explorer to allow pop-ups for the web site. This may be done automatically or manually.
The automatic method will setup Internet Explorer for Windows to accept as trusted the following trusted campus web sites:
epo.uwrf.edu
esis.uwrf.edu
its.uwrf.edu
patchlink.uwrf.edu
webfs.uwrf.edu
studentpayroll.services.wisc.edu
updates.uwrf.edu
uwrf.courses.wisconsin.edu
To setup Internet Explorer automatically, you must logon while on campus and have a J: drive. Click Start and then click Run. Then type in or copy and paste the following line and click OK:
J:\install\IE7\IESetup.exe
Follow the simple onscreen instructions. If you need help, contact IT Services.
There is also a manual method for adding a trusted site if it is not one of those listed above.
Cookies are small text files that store information about your Internet use. They are placed on your computer to track information when you visit certain web sites. Sometimes cookies are needed to demonstrate your right to access certain web pages. For instance, if cookies are turned off you will not be able to eSIS, FAA, Student Payroll (Madison's site), and others.
By default cookies are allowed in Internet Explorer. But if you or some security software you have installed turns off the ability of web sites to place cookies on your computer, then you may not be able to access certain web sites. To allow cookies for a site, click the Tools menu and then Internet Options... Next go to the Privacy tab and click Sites. Type in the web address of the site you want to allow and click Allow. Click OK and then OK again.
Internet Explorer will now allow cookies from that web site. If cookies do not still seem to be allowed, then it may be that other security software is installed on your computer and is blocking cookies. Examples of these are the Google toolbar and the Yahoo toolbar, but there are many others. If third-party software is blocking cookies on your computer, you will need to discover what application is doing the blocking and either uninstall that software or determine how to make an exception for the web site you are visiting.
