Viewing shared mailboxes with Eudora for Windows

Shared mailboxes are mailboxes that are not your own, but that you may have access to on the mail server. Examples are the facstf-l and students mailing lists folders. Also if another individual has shared personal mail folders with you, these procedures will help you to access those folders.

The following instructions were written for version 6 of Eudora. Some older versions of Eudora are not able to view mail using the imap protocol. If you are not using Eudora version 5 or later, we suggest that you upgrade to the latest version. You can discover what version of Eudora you have by selecting About Eudora... from the Help menu. If you need Eudora upgraded on a university-owned computer, please request an upgrade from IT Services.

These instructions are somewhat technical. You may wish to print these instructions. If you would like assistance with this, please contact IT Services.

First, view the Mailboxes list in Eudora. Normally this a window on the left side of your Eudora screen. If you don't see it there, click the Tools menu and select Mailboxes. The Mailboxes window will be similar to the picture below.

If you do not see a <Dominant> object, Eudora needs to be switched to imap mode. Click here. If you do see a <Dominant> object, then Eudora is using imap and you will be able to view shared mailboxes. right-click <Dominant> and select Refresh Mailbox List from the pop-up menu (see below). Shared mailboxes, such as facstf-l and students, will soon appear in the list below Inbox. If you are looking for a folder shared with you by another individual, this will appear under a folder labeled user . It will likely be at the bottom of your list under <Dominant>.

Since the facstf-l and students folders are available to everyone, they are read-only. You can read messages in these folders, but cannot delete them. Neither can you place other messages in these folders. Since they are not your personal mailboxes, they do not count against your email quota. If someone else has shared a folder with you it will appear under user. Whether you can change or add to these folders will depend upon whether the person granting you access gave you read-only or read and write access.

This completes the instructions for accessing shared mailboxes in Eudora for Windows. Again, if you need assistance, please contact IT Services.

Setup Eudora to use imap

In Eudora, select Personalities from the Tools menu. You will see a window like the one below.

Right-click the <Dominant> object and select Properties from the pop-up menu.

Go to the Incoming Mail tab to see a dialogue like the one below. Please set it up with the options you see below. To change the destination for deleted mail, click the button to the right of Move it to: (labeled INBOX.Trash in the illustration). Click OK to save your changes.

You can now return to the instructions above for refreshing the mailbox list.
