Configuring Eudora for Windows for off-campus use

Eudora is an easy-to-use software tool that reads and sends email messages. During the installation you will be asked for your name, email address, and Falcon Account username. If you are installing Eudora for off-campus use, you will also need to know the email and account information for your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If you do not already know your UW-River Falls email address and Falcon Account username, you can use the FAA tool to determine these.

Obtaining Eudora for Windows

If your campus computer has a paid version of Eudora for Windows provided by IT Services, then you already have a license to use Eudora for Windows on your home computer as well. IT Services has CDs with this software that you can borrow from 133 Davee Library. Call us first to arrange pick up at (715) 425-4357. You may also copy Eudora to a zip disk or USB drive from the network drive J:\Eudora\ForHome.

If you do not have Eudora for Windows installed on your campus computer, you will need to purchase this software before installing it at home.

Configuring Eudora
After installing Eudora, start the program. As you are prompted for information, provide the information needed to download and send mail using your own Internet Service Provider (ISP). Do not provide any information about your UW-River Falls account at this point. You will need to know the following information from your ISP - email address, login name, incoming mail server, (POP or IMAP), outgoing email server, and whether authentication is required.

Important: After Eudora is configured for your ISP, see that you can send and receive email successfully through your ISP before proceeding. Do not proceed until you can send and receive mail successfully through your ISP. If you need assistance with this, please contact the tech support for your ISP.

Now it is time to configure Eudora to send and receive email for your UW-River Falls email account. Click the Tools menu and select Options. Select Sending Mail in the left column. For SMTP Relay Personality: select <Dominant>. Click OK.

Next, f rom the Tools menu, select Personalities. The left pane should list one personality, <Dominant>, We are going to add another for your UW-River Falls mail. When you send mail or reply to mail now, you will notice that the From field is a drop-down box. If you wish to send a message with your uwrf personality, just select it from the drop-down list.

If you like, you can configure Eudora so that when you delete a message it is immediately removed to the trash. Otherwise it will just be marked for deletion and you will need to choose Purge Messages from the Message menu to remove deleted messages. To have Eudora immediately move deleted messages to the Trash, right-click the UWRF personality (Tools, Personalities) and choose Properties. On the Incoming Mail tab choose When I delete a message Move it to: . Click the button and select the Trash folder which is inside the UWRF

Eudora is now configured to send and receive email with your Falcon Account.

To read mail, View your mailboxes again (Tools, Mailboxes), You will find your mail that is on the server under the <Dominant> heading. You will find your local mailboxes under the Eudora heading. Click a plus to see what folders are inside a folder. Double-click a folder to open that folder. Highlight a message to preview it. Double-click a message to open the message.

File attachments can be opened directly from email messages. If you wish to save a file attachment for later reference, right-click that attachment in your message and choose Save Attachment As... Choose a suitable folder and save the attachment.
