Mac OS X - Special Folders

Mac OS X has many folders that exist for specific reasons and should not (in some cases cannot) be deleted.

Special Top-level Folders

Applications - Mac OS X applications ... this is the default install location for all MacOS X programs

Applications (Mac OS 9) - Mac OS 9 applications ... this is where older software that only runs in Classic should reside

Library - fonts, desktop wallpaper, other items available system-wide (all users)

System - contains most of the Mac OS X operating system files and is protected from modification

System Folder - the folder for the Mac OS 9 operating system

Users - contains a 'home directory' for every user with an account on the computer

User's Folders

Desktop - this is the folder that contains all the files that appear on your desktop. You can browse it like any other folder

Documents - the default saving location for most applications in Mac OS X. It is also where may email programs store their information

Library - personal settings, fonts, preference panes, desktop wallpaper, etc.

Music - default storage location for your music files (from iTunes)

Movies - default storage location for your movie files (from iMovie)

Pictures - default storage location for your photos (from iTunes) as well as a handy place to put desktop wallpapers

Public - folder which other users with accounts on the computer have access to

Sites - folder for storing websites for personal web sharing
