Locking MacOS X

The ability to secure your workstation is one of the many features available in MacOS X that wasn't available in MacOS 9. The way to do it is to turn on password protection for your screensaver. The username and password used for this feature is the same that is used to log into the computer and is not tied to your Falcon account. Follow the instructions below for MacOS X 10.2 or 10.3 and later.

Locking MacOS X 10.2

1) Open System Preferences (this can be done by selecting it from the Apple menu)

2) Select 'Screen Effects' from the Personal section:

3) Click on the "Activation" tab if it's not already selected, then select "Use my user account password"

4) Click on the "Hot Corners" tab and put a check in the box you want to use for a "hot corner" (hot corners are corners of your computer screen you can move your mouse pointer to in order to trigger an action) that will trigger the screensaver.

5) Close the "System Preferences" window.

At this point a password will be required to use the computer once the screensaver has started and you can engage the screensaver immediately with a hot-corner rather than waiting for your computer to be idle for a period of time.

Locking MacOS X 10.3+

1) Open System Preferences (this can be done by selecting it from the Apple menu)

2) Select 'Dashboard & Exposé' from the Personal section (circled in violet below):

5) Put a check in the box for "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screensaver". It's also advisable to ensure "Disable automatic login" is also checked.
