Network Services
The Networking Services (NS) unit within Information Technology Services (IT Services)
is responsible for the management of the campus network infrastructure (backbone)
and the services provided to utilize it.
Responsibilities of the IT Services-NS unit include:
- Design (at the logical level), installation, management and expansion of:
- All electronic networking devices connected to the backbone to enable
the backbone to be effectively utilized.
- All campus local area networks (LANs) and the networking devices attached
to them.
- All campus information servers, regardless of location, operating system,
etc.
- Operating systems currently supported by Networking Services include
Linux, SunOS/Solaris, and Windows Server.
- Networking protocols and services currently supported include AppleTalk,
DHCP, IP, NFS, and Netbui.
- All Internet services, such as DNS, email, ftp, news, user authentication,
and www.
- Determine appropriate hardware to be used for networking devices, file servers,
print servers, network adapters, etc.
- Research and deployment of new technologies as necessary.
- Installation and trouble-shooting of the server operating system (OS), including
installation of new versions and patches as necessary.
- Create and maintain campus directory / authentication services
- Establishment of appropriate security procedures and monitoring to ensure
that security is maintained.
