Introduction
How does the spam filtering work?
What about virus filtering?
I had an email rejected as being a "security hazard"? What
is that about?
The University of Wisconsin - River Falls has implemented email filtering to help protect our campus from computer viruses and other security threats, as well as unwanted spam. Please read the information below to learn specifically how this has been implemented on campus.
Spam filtering occurs through the combined use of the SpamAssassin software package, manual spam server blocking and the technique of greylisting.
You will occasionally receive some non-spam email that will be marked as spam, and some spam that is not marked. This will always be the case, as it is difficult to guess which email will be considered spam by a particular recipient.
You can find more information about how spam filtering is accomplished on the UW-RF mail system here.
All email is being scanned for computer viruses. Email containing viruses will be removed from the mail before delivery. In any case, the intended recipient of the email and the person sending the mail will be notified that a virus was detected by the system. The mail sent to both people will include information on why the mail was considered to have a virus. The virus will be quarantined and kept on the mail server for a few weeks in case we need to study it.
Mail is altered for viruses either because it contains a dangerous attachment
type, because it contains information that was scanned and found to be a virus,
or for matching dangerous patterns in the name of files that are attached. Top ![]()
Many of the Windows email clients are very vulnerable to a number of exploits.
We are altering email which may be a hazard to computers - either on campus
or off campus. In addition to viruses, emails which contain attachments of certain types or with certain characters in their file names can also pose a hazard. More information on how the UW-RF email system handles attachments is available here. Top ![]()
