UW-River Falls is a member of WiscNet, a regional network located in Wisconsin. UW-River Falls connects to WiscNet as our first step in how we connect to the rest of the Internet.
The WiscNet network operations center (NOC) located in Madison informs WiscNet members about WiscNet operations via a mailing list. This mailing list is made available here so that you can be informed about possible network outages that will affect your ability to reach off-campus sites.
There are several key hub locations within WiscNet. UW-River Falls connects to the WiscNet hub in Eau Claire, WI. If you see information in the WiscNet outages that refers to the Eau Claire hub, chances are good that you will have problems connecting to sites located beyond Eau Claire. You can probably connect to UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stout, or PressEnter, but other UW campuses are likely unavailable as are sites outside Wisconsin.
WiscNet is a network which exists only within Wisconsin. To get connected to the larger Internet, the WiscNet network is connected to another network named NapNet. NapNet is located in Chicago, Illinois. You may see references to NapNet in the WiscNet outages information. If there is a problem with NapNet, chances are good that you may have problems connecting to sites outside of WiscNet. You should be able to connect to any site that is also part of WiscNet however.
