In June of 2005, Apple announced they were switching their entire Macintosh product line from the G4 and G5 processors to Intel processors. In some ways, this change is similar to the migration to PowerPC in the mid-90's and the migration from MacOS 9 to MacOS X in recent years in that Apple has made provisions for backward compatibility. More information on that switch is available elsewhere on our website.
Applications which require MacOS 9 (or older) and therefore run in the "Classic" environment in MacOS X will not be compatible the new hardware. These applications will not be available on the new Macintosh lab and TEC computers to be purchased and installed during Summer 2006 and later. The following is a list of affected applications currently installed in the ITS Macintosh labs, Educational Technology Center and Technology Enhanced Classrooms (info links go off-site to product pages):
