What is FalconFile?
An improved way for students, faculty, and staff to store, access, control, and share their electronic files. FalconFile will provide users with new functionality including:
- Off-campus access to your files via any web browser!
- Ability to streamline e-mail by sending hyperlinks to documents instead of emailing attachments!
- Ability to collaborate on documents with individuals outside of the UWRF community!
- Personal control over who can access your files and folders!
Exception: Multi-user databases and GIS lab files will not have the new functionality noted above.
What will FalconFile replace?
Storage areas included in the project that will be replaced by FalconFile are:
- FalconFS (S:\Home), used by students and some faculty/staff
- OasisFS (T:\Oasis), used by student organizations
- CoursesFS (P:\Courses), used by some faculty and their students
- Zeus (G:\Dept and H:\Home), used by faculty, staff, and student workers
- the-village, used by the Publications department
- Elvis (G:\ and H:\), used by Student Affairs staff and student workers
- GISFS, used by Geography lab
- Cartman, FredNetFS, ITSNS Home, and ITS IS home, used by various ITS and Student Affairs IT staff
Do I need to do anything to prepare for FalconFile?
Students: Your files are already on FalconFile. You can access your files and links to the support page at https://falconfile.uwrf.edu, using your Falcon Account to log-in.
Faculty and Staff: See below for tips on preparing your personal and departmental file areas for the big move!
- H:\Home Preparation
- Reorganize your individual files
- Store University related work on the network
- Store any personal files on your hard drive
- Consider storing course materials on D2L
- Delete, Move or Archive
- Delete never used files and folders
- Copy rarely used files and folders to CD/DVD
- Delete duplicate files and folders
- Create new folders as needed
- Move files into new folders
- G:\Dept Preparation
- Plan your organization structure
- Create new folders
- Delete, Move, or Archive
- Delete never used files and folders
- Copy rarely used files and folder to CD/DVD
- Delete duplicate files and folders
- Move files into new folders
What’s the technology behind FalconFile?
FalconFile includes the following technologies:
- A fully redundant Storage Area Network (SAN) is the foundation…
- Files are stored on a large pool of disk that is more flexible and readily expandable than our current architecture of storing directly on many separate servers.
- “Fully redundant” means that there are identical twin systems in separate buildings. If one side “goes down”, traffic can be re-routed to the other system with minimal interruption for users.
- Xythos software is what most users will use to access their files…
- The web application (https://falconfile.uwrf.edu) can be used from any web browser; on or off campus
- Xythos Drive will map drives, giving FalconFile the same look and feel as the ‘old way’. It is currently on all lab computers and will be installed on University owned faculty/staff computers as FalconFile is rolled out to the departments. While on campus, there is the option to use Xythos Drive or the web application.
- Other campuses are already using Xythos or will be in the future, including UW Milwaukee (PantherFile), UW Madison (My WebSpace), and University of Minnesota (NetFiles)
- Windows File Shares (much like we have now) will be used for GIS lab files and databases that have multiple simultaneous users, since those files do not function well with Xythos.
